Bat Control/Removal
North America is home to many different species of bats. The three most common colonizing species are the Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus) which is common in most of the US, especially the more northern states. These bats are small, with a wingspan of 8 inches, and a weight of less than half an ounce. The females will form large colonies, often in a building like an attic or a barn. The young are born in June, and can fly as early as August. They can live up to 30 years approximately, though the average lifespan in the wild may be around 7 years. They do hibernate in the winter. The Big Brown Bat (Eptesicus fuscus) is another common bat in the northern states. It has a wingspan up to 13 inches, and can live up to 19 years in the wild. They mate in October, before hibernating during winter months, and after a delayed fertilization and a 60 day gestation, they will give birth to one or two baby bats in early June. The Mexican Free-Tail Bat Tadarida brasiliensis is a bat common in the south. It has a wingspan of about 8 inches, a weight of half an ounce, and can live up to 16 years. These bats can form huge colonies, in some cases several million. They mate in the fall, but delay fertilization, and one pup is born in early June. It will fly about eight weeks later. All of these bats often like to roost in man-made buildings, and love the attics of homes.
Bats need only a ¼ to ½ inch opening to enter into a building. They are known to roost in attics, soffits, louvers, chimneys, under siding, eaves, and shingles and behind shutters. Bats are important to the environment and are FEDERALLY PROTECTED. This means you cannot use pesticides or other harmful measures! Bats are also known to occasionally carry rabies and should only be handled by licensed professionals.
Guano (bat feces) is a serious health risk when accumulated in moderate to large
quantities, like the photo shown. Guano has fungal spores that carry histoplasmosis, a lung disease that humans can contract by inhabiting your home or business, or just a stray that entered through and open door or window, one of our trained technicians will take care of the problem, day or night, 24/7. We’re just a phone call away.
Some typical bat behaviors include:
- bats are nocturnal
- they sleep in roosts during daylight hours
- they feast on flying insects
- bats use echoloaction in order to navigate
- they emit high-pitched chirps
