Wildlife Viruses in Severna ParkDogs have been the ideal domestic pet for years in Severna Park. Known as man’s best friend, most dog owners will agree that their dog is like another member of their family. One way to treat your dog like a member of the family is to protect them from harmful diseases and viruses that pests can bring. Unwanted wildlife like raccoons, bats, and opossums can harbor bugs and diseases that can have a serious, even fatal, effect on your canine. When you find evidence of unwanted wildlife in your yard or home, it is important to know the diseases dogs are vulnerable to and what symptoms to look for.

  1. Rabies- Probably the most well-known disease a dog can contract from wildlife, rabies is a virus that attacks the central nervous system. If left untreated, rabies can lead to brain infections and ultimately death for your dog. Symptoms to look for in your dog include change of behavior like constant barking and growling, disorientation, and a change of tone in your dog’s bark.
  2. Canine Distemper- This virus attacks different systems in your pet after the animal is infected. It begins attacking the tonsils and typically ends with the nervous system. Initial symptoms can include high fever, watery discharge from the eyes and nose, and a reddening of the eyes. Further symptoms can include vomiting, coughing, and even further seizures and paralysis.
  3. Parvovirus- This virus is highly contagious and tends to attack cells that reproduce rapidly, like those that line the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms of the virus can include diarrhea, depression, and fever.

If your dog experiences any of the above symptoms or displays any abnormal behavior, dog owners should probably seek help from a veterinarian immediately.
