Have you been noticing snakes on your property as the weather gets warm? You’re not alone. One of the snakes you may come across is the Northern Water Snake as it is the most common snake homeowners come across.

You will know whether you have a Northern Water Snake problem if you notice a 4 ft long snake on your property that’s brown, gray, red or a browny black. If you look at the neck of the snake, you will see dark cross bands. The rest of the snake body has dark spots. The older the Northern Water Snake, the darker the snake. As the snake ages, it will become completely black.

Young Northern Water Snakes will have belly colors that vary – white, yellow or gray. If you live by a lake, pond, stream, river, marsh or canal, there’s a good chance there are Northern Water Snakes nearby as these snakes can live anywhere water is present.

The snake eats small fish, frogs, worms, baby turtles, tiny birds, as well as small mammals.

From now through June, you may see a great deal of Northern Water Snakes in your neighborhood because they mate from April to June. This snake does not lay eggs. It’s a live bearer and the Northern Water Snake can have up to 30 young at a time between the months of August and October.

Here is a list of the Northern Water Snakes common predators:

  • Birds
  • Raccoons
  • Opossums
  • Foxes
  • Bull Frogs
  • Snapping Turtles

If you encounter a Northern Water Snake head on, do not attempt to pick it up. When it feels threatened, it bites, poops and releases a foul smelling liquid.
