You may not be an ophidiophobic with a full-blown fear of snakes, but next to no one wants one slithering around their Riva home. Possibly the most dangerous thing about snakes is the fact that you do not necessarily know which ones are venomous and which ones are not; trying to remove a snake that you think is harmless on your own could prove disastrous if the snake is actually a venomous variety. Whether you need venomous snake removal or non-venomous snake removal, Mid-Atlantic Wildlife Control is here to help. Here are a few tips on knowing your snakes so that you can inform your animal control experts what they’re dealing with from the start. Knowing your non-venomous snakes Of the 27 snakes varieties in Maryland, 25 are non-venomous, so your odds of encountering a non-venomous snake are relatively higher than the alternative. While these snakes cannot kill you with a bite, then can still pose a threat to you and your home if they find their way inside. Snakes enter through openings in the foundation of your home, as well as open pipes and gaps. Because there are so many varieties of non-venomous snakes, it is easier to identify them if you know, in detail, what the venomous varieties are. Knowing your venomous snakes The two venomous snakes in Maryland are the Copperhead and the Timber Rattlesnake. The Copperhead is well-adapted to blending in with its surroundings; its neutral brown and tan coloring camouflages it against trees and the ground. While Copperheads are not a very aggressive species, they should be treated with caution, as they will bite if they feel threatened. The Timber Rattlesnake is more easily identifiable as it is the only snake in Maryland with a rattle on its tail. Unlike Copperheads, whose venom is not necessarily deadly, the Timber Rattlesnake’s venom is strong enough to cause death if not treated immediately.
